Max Peñalva - Farmer
Max Peñalva was born in 1974 in Marcala, La Paz, a region renowned for its deep-rooted coffee-growing and livestock heritage. Coming from a long line of coffee producers, Max represents the third generation of farmers in his family, a tradition that began with his grandparents. Raised in a family where coffee was more than just a crop—it was a way of life—Max’s journey in the coffee industry began at an early age under the guidance of his father, Virgilio Peñalva, a dedicated hacienda owner and expert in the craft.
From a young age, Max was immersed in the world of coffee production, learning every aspect of the process from his father. The lessons he absorbed as a child have stayed with him throughout his life, shaping his approach to coffee farming. His passion for producing high-quality coffee is a testament to the deep connection he feels to his family's legacy and their land.
In 1997, Max embarked on his own journey by establishing his first coffee farm. However, the path was not without its challenges. He faced significant economic hurdles and battled pests that threatened his crops, but these early experiences helped him develop a deep understanding of the coffee industry. Through perseverance, Max learned the intricacies of coffee production and developed the skills needed to succeed.
Today, Max operates a model farm located in the village of Santa Cruz Marcala at an altitude of 1,690 meters above sea level. This farm, which spans 5.5 acres, has been passed down through generations—from his grandparents to his father, and now to Max. In 2020, he began planting the land, transforming it into a beautiful, thriving coffee farm that boasts a variety of high-quality Arabica strains, including yellow and pink Catuai, IHCAFE90, Lempira, Parayneima, and Bourbon. These exotic varieties contribute to exceptional cupping scores, elevating the reputation of his farm’s produce.
Max’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and excellence in coffee production has made his farm a standout in the region. As a brother to Lili Peñalva, and part of a large family of coffee producers, Max continues to uphold the Peñalva family’s proud tradition. His passion for coffee, combined with his dedication to his family's heritage, ensures that the Peñalva name remains synonymous with the finest coffee Honduras has to offer.
